Homework for 2/19 Part I

I just found this video, and given our discussions about values, purpose, and mission, it's well worth watching. So watch it, and the video below. Then add a comment about what you found most interesting. Daniel Pink talks about autonomy, mastery, and purpose. How do they apply to your future, and to being an entrepreneur?

Then watch this (much shorter) video.  What is your reaction to them?  Would you ask these questions or rewrite them?  (Add your response in your comment.)

Two questions that can change your life from Daniel Pink on Vimeo.

  1. I want to know how autonomy can apply to education. I spend so much time trying to get all the required homework done for every class (and sometimes that doesn't happen). It seems like autonomy would fit very nicely into a liberal arts education.

I was incredibly fascinated by the relationship of incentives and cognitive tasks. I know I do my best work when there is something interests me OR for whatever reason I have a strong feeling of wanting something (which is more rare).

  2. I think that Daniel Pink's idea that rewards "concentrate" our minds is very interesting. I can see how rewards can narrow people's way of thinking and shutting down their ability to perform. I agree with his way of thinking. However, I also think that in the large scheme of things, rewards DO work. I think that every human wants happiness- maybe different levels of happiness- but we all want it...and happiness is a positive reward. If we work and get money to pay everything we want, we are happy. If we work hard in class and we get good grades, we are happy. If we practice a lot and we perform well, we are happy. So I think that positive rewards work when they have to do with something bigger than just a prize for doing a small task.

I believe that autonomy, mastery and purpose are three key components for success. I like the way Daniel Pink approaches this because although I knew they existed, I had never put them in words. I think these can be applied to any entrepreneur. In my case, I could apply this to Arts Administration by having a purpose and mission of why I want to be there, study so that I can master my work and be an independent woman that can make accurate decisions on her own.

The second video was very interesting as well. I really like the first question: "what is your sentence?" I hope I die with a good sentence attached to me. However, I wouldn't ask myself every night if today I did better than yesterday. I don't think it is a linear process. I could do worse today than yesterday, but still succeed. I think that it does not take into account the mistakes and personal issues people have. Those can make people perform worse, but in the long run they can still be successful.
